Crochelle by Maria Triantafillou
I first met Maria last summer when she contacted La Grèce J’aime to take part in our outfit posts’ photo shoots. When I visited her atelier downtown Athens I was not only impressed by the quality of her work but her smiling attitude to life as well. A charming lady who breathes life and happiness into her vibrant designs which in return exuberate a sense of romance from the past.
How did you decide to start designing clothes with knitted lace details and what does Crochelle mean?
I studied Fashion Design and when I started off as a designer I initially worked with fabrics. However, I was always fascinated by knitted lace. I noticed that whenever I travelled somewhere new, I always brought back a knitted dress or handmade bustier but had never imagined I would build my career around it. It’s not a decision I made. I have a feeling knitted lace designs chose me and not the other way round. When this happened, I worked with handmade knitted lace and then combined it with fabrics. Crochelle as my brand name came naturally about 3 years later with crochet defining my technique and French word elle defining the feminine character of my designs.
What makes your work different and what is your FW15/16 collection’s character?
It goes without saying that what makes my work different is handmade knitted lace in bright colour combinations. My FW15/16 collection is quieter as far as colours are concerned, a little more greyish with colour highlights. A clear expression of how our everyday life is changing but with strokes of colour expressing optimism-necessary to make us feel happy even in the gloomiest times!
How would you define style?
Style is about not being trapped in any style. It’s about not needing to belong somewhere because you only belong to yourself. I think that when your appearance expresses who you are and how you feel without a need for posing the result of it is absolutely charming!
Who is the woman wearing Crochelle?
Crochelle is worn by women who have made friends with their feminine side. They love handmade quality clothing and are not afraid to express their sensuality.

What inspires your work?
Everything around me! Nature is a constant inspiration source. The way a room is decorated, a special woman, an old crochet made by my grandma, the colours of a photo. Everything as viewed through my personal perspective and of course feelings.
You said that your latest collection is more greyish but with strokes of colour expressing happiness. Where does your optimism come from and what are your plans for the future?
My optimism comes from the realisation that Faith can move mountains! Belief and confidence in what you do can achieve even the most difficult goals! As far as the future is concerned, truth is I’m looking forward to seeing how I will even surprise myself!
Do you think crisis is an opportunity?
Crisis first makes you weak but then brings you into action! It’s definitely a chance to face our limits and try different ways. The only choice you have is to evolve, differentiate your work and look for new markets in other countries. If this is combined with insistence and wisdom in mind then opportunity is right there!
And now a question we ask all our guests! What is La Grèce J’aime for you?
Small neighbourhoods, cobbled streets, lively friends, laughter, blue, blue and some more blue. Green and stone. An orgasm of creativity and new ideas. A place where the old meets the new. A place where conservatism and stiffness meet what is bold and avant-garde. A place where what is ours meets what fascinates us from other lands. A constant encounter of everything we love and hate.
